club competitions

Some competitions go directly to a county round, and then successful members go through to the Northern Ireland round.
Public Speaking:
There are two sections in the Public speaking, Prepared and impromptu. Prepared means the member gets to prepare a speech on one of a supplied list of topics. The length of the speech depends on your age group. Impromptu public speaking is only open to over 16s, and competitors are given a set time to prepare a speech on a supplied topic. Competitors have to talk for a minimum of one minute and are only allowed 10 words on a card into the room with them. Public speaking is a great competition for improving confidence and is an important lifeskill.
Group debating:
This takes the form of three members in a team debating against three members in another team (usually another club.) For junior members the topic is supplied on the night and preparation time is provided. Senior members are given their topic in advance and each team (for and against the motion, or topic) take turns in giving their speech. This competition takes place in November and the finals are held in conjunction with the craft and something from scrap competitions in March.
Soil Assessment:
This competition is at the end of the summer and members are given a tutorial on soil assessment and then allowed to examen two soil profiles (two freshly dug holes.) A question paper is filled in and judged and the winners are notified and go on to the finals which are held at the Northern Ireland Ploughing match.
Tractor Handling:
This allows competitors to drive a tractor around a obstacle course. The finalists get to make up part of the County Team st Balmoral Show.
County Committee Competitions:
Some competitions are just ran by the County Committee, for example the Young Hostess, and the Young Farmer Competition. Prizes for these are presented at the County AGM in March.
